Best-before and use-by dates
Best-before and use-by dates mean different things. Best-before dates concern quality. Use-by dates concern safety. We consider suitable stock beyond its best-before date after assessment. We do not buy food past its use-by date for resale.
A best-before date is not an automatic acceptance of the stock. Condition, storage and suitable labelling still matter.
Details for each product line
- Product name, quantity and pack size.
- The type of date mark and the earliest date in the lot.
- Batch or lot information and clear packaging photographs.
- Storage conditions, temperature requirements and allergen information.
- Any packaging damage and the latest practical collection date.
Arrange assessment before moving the goods
For each line, include the date mark, batch or lot details and any damaged packaging. Tell us about temperature requirements, allergen information and the latest practical collection date. Do not send goods before acceptance has been agreed.
If the date information is not yet available, say so when you enquire. We will need the relevant details before a food purchase can be agreed.
